A new program in Will County will provide free pick-up of unwanted electronic items, including that broken printer or outdated video game console cluttering up the basement. The items will then be recycled.

County officials said the program is the first in the Illinois, since state lawmakers approved a measure in 2008 prohibiting electronic materials from landfills starting January 2012.

The program starts April 1 for most Will County residents and be extended into other areas by the end of the year.

Residents in the following communities can take advantage of the pilot program: Aurora, Bolingbrook, Crest Hill, Elwood, Homer Glen, Joliet, Lemont, Lockport, Minooka, Naperville, New Lenox, Plainfield, Rockdale, Romeoville, Shorewood, Wilmington, and Woodridge. The following townships will also be part of the pilot program: Channahon, DuPage, Homer, Jackson, Joliet, Lockport, New Lenox, Plainfield, Troy, and Wheatland.

The program is not costing the county any money, officials said. The Will County Land Use Department has partnered with Vintage Tech Recyclers in Romeoville to accept its electronic recyclables, a partnership that has existed for several years, but is now expanding. Vintage Tech Recyclers takes the electronics and sell pieces back to the manufacturer.

The following items will be accepted for recycling: computers, laptops, monitors, printers, televisions, all types of telephones, answering machines, computer mouse devices, keyboards, zip drives, computer cables, string lights, microwaves, fax, scanners, MP3s, PDAs, video game consoles, video cassette players/recorders and DVD players.

There is a limit of 10 items per service call, but future pick-ups can be arranged as necessary.

Residents must have first-floor access for pick-up. Drop-off services at 12 sites will remain available for apartment residents or anyone without front-door access. For information, contact the Will County Land Use Department at 815-727-8834 or visit
