Egyptian Health Department held successful Electronics Recycling Days on Friday and Saturday, May 17 and 18, 2013. The events were held in Shawneetown and Carmi. Both individuals and businesses from Gallatin and White Counties dropped off electronics to be recycled that were broken, obsolete, or just no longer used. Enough electronic items were collected to fill two semi trailers.

Effective Jan. 1, 2012, the state of Illinois banned 17 electronic devices from landfills. The list of banned items includes televisions, computers, laptops, monitors, printers, satellite receivers, and many other items common in nearly every home. With limited options for disposal of these items by homeowners, some were dumped illegally or stored indefinitely in barns and garages. Egyptian Health Department decided to hold electronics recycling events in their three counties of Saline, Gallatin, and White to fill the needs of residents to dispose of these items. The first event was held in Saline County in 2012 and was also a huge success.

After the collection the items were then taken by Vintage Tech Recyclers of Romeoville to be broken down, recycled or refurbished.

Thanks to the City of Shawneetown and Carmi Township for use of their facilities for the collection.Egyptian Health Department hopes to hold similar events in the future.
