Reasons to Recycle your Cell Phone

It seems like every time we change the television channel, there is a commercial for a new cell phone that’s hitting the market. Advancements in technology can be great, but the rapid rate of obsoletion is also overwhelming. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the average North American gets a new cell phone every 18 to 24 months, and we discard nearly 125 millions phones each year. This creates more than 65,000 tons of electronic waste.

Cell phones are made up of various components that include hazardous materials, such as lead, mercury, cadmium, brominated flame retardants and arsenic. When cell phones are tossed in the garbage and become part of the general waste stream, these hazardous materials can be released and cause great damage to the environment, animals, and humans alike. cell phone
