Northern Illinois University to hold Electronics Recycling Event with Vintage Tech, Habitat for Humanity

Northern Illinois student group Team Honey Badger will be teaming up with Vintage Tech and Habitat for Humanity to host a free electronics recycling event. This event, held on April 19, will last from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the NIU Convocation Center.

The event, open to all, will allow students and other campus and community members to responsibly dispose of any old or unwanted electronics. Even businesses, schools, and other organizations or establishments are encouraged to bring their used electronics to the free event.

Vintage Tech is a certified recycler that operates across several states to offer free and convenient electronics recycling. Its mission is to keep electronics out of landfills, so that the harmful toxins that exist in many electronics will not be released into the environment.

As of January 1 of this year, the Electronics Recycling and Reuse law (banned many common electronics from landfills. This governmental effort to help the environment made responsible recycling mandatory for all, under penalty of a large fine.

Because of Vintage Tech’s partnership with Habitat for Humanity, a portion of the funds raised through recycling is donated to the organization’s efforts to build affordable housing for low-income families of the community.

Some of the items that will be accepted include: laptops, computers, printers, scanners, copiers, fax machines, keyboards, cell phones, modems, cables, mice, zip drives, video game consoles, IPods, DVD players, VCR’s, CD drives, stereos, MP3 players, radios, calculators, servers, networking equipment, cameras, camcorders, fans, microwaves, telephones, pagers, answering machines, toasters, blenders, battery back-ups, adding machines, postage meters, and typewriters. Batteries should be removed from all items.

Any electronics capable of storing sensitive data will be wiped clean through Vintage Tech’s data destruction service provided by Blancco. The NIU Convocation Center is located at 1525 W. Lincoln Highway, DeKalb, IL  60115.
