Monthly Electronics Recycling Event Returns

b d

Residents from all local communities may drop off their used televisions, computers, cell phones and other electronic devices to be recycled at no charge.

Those looking to get a jump on their spring cleaning can start this Saturday by disposing of any broken or used electronics at Shelby Township’s monthly recycling event.

Held on the last Saturday of every month, save December, individual residents, schools, churches, businesses, libraries and other municipalities have the opportunity to safely recycle a variety of electronic devices for free.

The event runs 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the municipal grounds south entrance on Van Dyke, just south of 24 Mile Road.

Per the township’s new contract with Vintage Tech Recyclers, which runs the monthly collection, charitable and community organizations can also benefit from the event, earning up to $250 for their group by volunteering their time.

These “co-sponsoring organizations” receive 25 percent of the revenue earned at the event or $250, whichever is greater.

A “community benefactor” also benefits from the new contract, as the remaining 75 percent of the funds collected are to be used for environmental beautification or environmental quality projects.

Any committee or club seeking to undertake green initiatves in Shelby Towship is eligible for this funding.

Organizations looking to co-sponsor future recycling events should contact the Department of Public Works at 586-731-5990. Organizations must be recognized as a 501(c)(3) service organization or public educational organization within Shelby Township and be run by non-paid volunteers or at a minimum administrative cost.

Items accepted for recycling include:

Televisions, Monitors, Computers, Laptops, Printers, Fax Machines, All-In-One Printers, VCR’s, Keyboards & Mice, DVD & CD Players, Microwaves, Stereos, Speakers, Miscellaneous Cables, Computer Parts, Telephones, Cell Phones, Game Consoles, Handheld Electronic Devices (iPods, Game Boys, etc.), Holiday Lights
