Free Electronics Recycling Event Jan. 29

Published: Monday, January 24, 2011

On Jan. 29, Shelby Township and area residents will have the opportunity to safely dispose of and recycle electronic equipment free of charge. The event will take place at the Shelby Township Municipal Building grounds, 52700 Van Dyke, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This event also includes schools, churches, libraries and municipal offices.

The Shelby Township Solid Waste and Recycling Committee recently announced that the Shelby Township Board of Trustees has entered into a contract with Vintage Tech Recyclers Inc. to provide this free electronics recycling service. Vintage Tech Recyclers Inc. has R2 certification, which ensures that all processes are compliant with required standards. Manufacturers of electronics equipment pay for this recycling service under a new state of Michigan law regarding electronics disposal and recycling.

This is an opportunity to keep electronics out of landfills and to dispose of electronics in an environmentally safe way through recycling.

The following electronics items will be accepted: televisions, monitors, computers, laptops, printers, fax machines, all-in-one printers, VCRs, keyboards and mice, DVD and CD players, microwaves, stereos, speakers, cables, computer parts, telephones, cell phones, game consoles, and handheld electronic devices such as iPods and Gameboys.

The following items are not accepted: typewriters, terminals, large copy machines, electronic tools, cash registers, all small and large household appliances such as toaster ovens, hair dryers, refrigerators and dish washers.

It is anticipated that future collections will be offered on the last Saturday of each month. For more information about this event and future collections, visit the Shelby Township Solid Waste and Recycling Committee web page at
