Doorstep Electronics Recycling Starts

By Stephanie Lulay

AURORA — Aurorans hoping to get rid of their used electronics will now have the option to have items picked up for recycling at their doorstep for free.

Vintage Tech Recyclers, the city’s recycling vendor, is offering front-door collection service by appointment only. A maximum of 10 electronic items will be accepted in one visit, said City spokesman Kevin Stahr. The recycling program previously ran twice monthly at two city-owned lots.

The service was first offered to Aurora’s Will County residents as part of a Will pilot program and is now being expanded to all of Aurora.

“Aurora’s electronics recycling has proven to be a very popular program, and this free front-door service adds further convenience to our residents to safely dispose of their old or unwanted devices,” said Mayor Tom Weisner.

Electronic items to be collected include monitors, computers, laptops, televisions, printers, fax machines, scanners, computer accessories, video game consoles, telephones, answering machines, cell phones, personal digital assistants, MP3 players, cameras, camcorders, networking equipment, DVD players, stereos and VCRs.

Microwaves are the only kitchen appliance that can be recycled.

Appliances such as air conditioners, stoves, refrigerators, freezers, toasters, coffee makers and other household hazardous waste materials will not be accepted.

Appointments can be made by calling 630-305-0922 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday to Friday. Residents must give their names, addresses, phone numbers and the number of items to be collected.

All electronics should be placed at the front door before 7 a.m. on the scheduled collection day.

The program is only available to homeowners or renters with front doors at the ground level.

The city will continue to host electronic recycling collection days. Electronic equipment may be dropped off at the Aurora Customer Service Center, 3770 McCoy Drive, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Aug. 20, Sept. 24, Oct. 22, Nov. 19 and Dec. 17. The city will host collection at the City’s Central Garage facility, 720 N. Broadway Ave., on Aug. 6, Sept. 10, Oct. 8, Nov. 5 and Dec. 3, also from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
