This press release came into the newsroom from the village of Algonquin:

ALGONQUIN – The village of Algonquin was recognized by the McHenry County Board as a recipient of the 2012 McHenry County Green Award for the Village’s Fall Cleanup and Recycling Drop-Off Event held in October 2011. The award evaluates programs based on four criteria: waste reduction, item reuse, recycling, and repurchasing of recycled products.

The village partnered with Waste Management and Vintage Tech Recyclers to provide a one-day recycling event. Waste Management provided containers for various recyclables including plastics, metals, wood, and cardboard, collecting approximately 16,500 pounds of recyclable material. Vintage Tech Recyclers collected approximately 18,000 pounds of electronic waste which will be recycled. Additionally, a truckload of usable items, including clothes, toys, housewares, etc., was collected and donated to Purple Heart at the event.

The Fall Cleanup and Recycling Drop-Off Event successfully diverted over 35,000 pounds of waste from landfills by either recycling or reusing unwanted products.

Established in 1994, the McHenry County Green Awards recognize the waste reduction, recycling and conservation efforts of McHenry County businesses, institutions, organizations, and individuals. McHenry County Green Awards is a reminder that everyone plays an important role in improving our community environment through waste reduction and recycling in our daily lives.

The 2012 Fall Cleanup and Recycling Drop-Off event is scheduled for October, with additional details becoming available closer to the event date. For more information on Algonquin’s environmental initiatives and events, please visit
