3 Reasons to Recycle Old Electronics

Millions of tons of electronics make up about 2% of the waste in our landfills. That percentage may not seem like a lot, but when you consider the reasons to dispose of electronics via other methods, it becomes a troubling statistic. Here are just a few reasons why you should recycle your old electronics instead of just throwing them away:

1. Dangerous Chemicals
Computers, televisions, cell phones and batteries are all full of highly toxic chemicals and elements. Batteries have poisonous cadmium in high quantities, laptops contain mercury, and televisions house up to 8 pounds of lead.  When placed in a landfill of these harmful  substances leak into our soil and water. Recycling these products means keeping our environment safer and less toxic.

2. Reusable Materials
Some of the things that we throw away are entirely functional, if only in need of a quick refurbishing. Cell phones for example, can be fixed up by companies to sell as cheaper alternatives to new products in developing countries. Other materials, like glass from CRT monitors and aluminum from laptop cases can be recycled and made into brand new products.

3. Limited Landfills
There is only so much space on our planet, and if we continue to throw 85% of our electronics into landfills, that space will quickly diminish. Recycling electronics helps to reduce the waste going to landfills, thus reducing the size and number of landfills we will need in the future.

There are many other reasons to recycle as much as you possibly can, for your own benefit, as well as that of the environment.
