Shelby Township electronics collection a success

Residents of Shelby Township and surrounding communities dropped off more than 30,000 pounds of unwanted electronics for proper disposal at the township's first electronics collection day.

The township's Solid Waste and Recycling Committee and the Board of Trustees entered an agreement recently with a firm called Vintage Tech to collect unwanted electronic equipment for recycling. Drop-off is free to residents and does not cost the township either.

On Jan. 29, Shelby Township held its first of what are to become monthly events. The township opened the collection to residents outside of Shelby Township as well, and the event drew participants from as far away as Auburn Hills, Chesterfield and Lenox townships.

"This shows that people want to dispose of their electronics in a responsible way that will protect the environment when they are informed and given the opportunity to do so," said Marietta Crabtree, chairwoman of the Shelby Township Solid Waste and Recycling Committee.

The next collection is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 26, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of the Shelby Township municipal complex, 52700 Van Dyke, at 24 Mile Road in Shelby Township. Future collections are planned for the rest of this year on the last Saturday of each month, except December.
